Scholarship Guidelines

E-mail Print PDF

Please refer to the National Head Start Association (NHSA) Scholarship booklet  for complete scholarship descriptions and applications.

Below are some suggested guidelines to use when submitting scholarship applications to the OHSA Scholarship Committee at the May State Meeting.

  1. All scholarship applications must be complete. Applications should be type, if possible and held together with a sturdy clip or presentation folder.  Double check to ensure your contact information is legible, and that all mandatory pieces of the application are enclosed.
  2. Double check personal goals statement, essays and summaries. Each application has very specific guidelines. Letters of Recommendation should be typed and no longer than one page. An ink signature is required.
  3. Ensure that you have enclosed proof of enrollment or acceptance in institute of higher learning (if application calls for it).
  4. All scholarships must be submitted in English. Although OHSA values all cultures and ethnic origins, this is a national mandate.
  5. Programs may submit one scholarship application per category. Exceptions include: Ann Phipps Memorial Scholarship and Phyllis J. Jones Memorial Scholarship for which programs may submit two applications.
  6. The Frank Roberts Memorial Scholarship is an OHSA only scholarship, and programs may submit unlimited applications.
  7. Programs must support the scholarship applicant and application process by editing, proof-reading, and reviewing for technical errors on applications before submitting to the OHSA Scholarship Committee.
  8. Applicants must submit at least two copies of the applications. One copy should be kept on file at the applicants program.
  9. All applicants are final at the time of receipt by the OHSA Scholarship Committee.

Scholarships are due at the State level at the May OHSA State meeting.

At the May OHSA State meeting, the Scholarship committee will review and score applications. Successful Oregon State applicants will be announced and invited to a Recognition Luncheon at the November State meeting.

Selected applications are forwarded to Region X HS Association (RXHSA).

In August, the Regional Committee reviews and scores the Parent of the Year and Beating the Odds applications only. In November, all of the other applications will be reviewed by Region X board of Directors, who then forwards the regional winners to the National Head Start Association for the national competition.
