Thanks to the tireless advocacy of Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), along with Congressman Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Southern Oregon’s Head Start programs will continue to serve over 900 preschoolers and provide employment for hundreds of local workers. This funding was secured after concerns that the program hadn’t received federal payments putting critical early education services at risk.
The restoration of funding will ensure that Head Start in Jackson and Josephine counties can maintain its essential services to children and families, many of whom rely on the program for a strong start in life.
Congressman Cliff Bentz emphasized: “Funding for Southern Oregon Head Start was never in danger of being terminated. The short delay in receipt of funding was a result of consolidation of agency offices. When my office alerted HUD about this problem, it was immediately rectified.”
Nancy Perin, Executive Director of OHSA, expressed her gratitude, stating, “This funding means everything to our families and staff. The restoration of resources for Southern Oregon’s Head Start programs will allow us to continue our mission of providing high-quality education and support to children who need it most. We are deeply grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden, and Congressman Bentz, for their leadership, and to the community for their advocacy. Their dedication to early childhood education is a testament to the belief that every child deserves the best possible start in life.”
Head Start continues to provide high-quality education, health services, and family support, ensuring a brighter future for thousands of children in Oregon.
